Digging near a neighbour: the Party Wall Act distances
New foundations on a terraced or semi-detached house can sit close to a neighbour's. Under section 6 of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996, excavating within three metres of a neighbouring building, below the level of its foundations, triggers a notice. So does excavating within six metres where the dig meets a 45-degree line drawn down from those foundations.

For a full plans application the authority must notify its outcome within five weeks of receipt, unless you agree a longer period in writing.
